What Is a Vessel Positioning System?
A vessel positioning system is a complex set of sensors and computer systems that automatically maintains a ship’s position.vessel positioning system This technology replaces anchors and allows operations at sea where mooring or anchoring is not feasible, such as in deep water, or when environmental factors such as tides or wind may cause a drift.
DP system components include position reference sensors, motion sensors (surge and sway), wind sensors, gyro compasses, and more. These sensors feed data to a control system that analyzes the information and determines how to adjust the ship’s propellers and thrusters to counteract the forces on it.
A computer program then calculates what the required steering angle should be for each of the vessels’ thrusters, based on how much it needs to shift in order to maintain its current position. This information, combined with the sensor data and knowledge of the ship’s dynamic model, is then used by the control system to automatically maintain a stable position.
Vessel positioning systems are used to control a ship in its six degrees of freedom, which consist of translation along two horizontal axes and rotation about the vertical axis (yaw). They can also be configured to position the vessel in relation to other objects such as other ships or underwater vehicles.
These systems are critical in offshore activities such as drilling or oil and gas exploration, where a single failure of the system could cost lives. They’re also used in crowded ports, where the speed and accuracy of berthing can improve efficiency, and in non-anchored “moorings” that are safer for marine life than traditional anchors.
The most advanced DP vessels, known as DP3 vessels, are designed to guard against any single failure in the system, even serious conditions such as a fire or flooding in watertight compartments. This level of redundancy makes them essential for dangerous maritime tasks where recovery crews can’t easily reach the site.
Using an integrated vessel tracking system, such as SkyFi’s, geospatial insights are made available to organizations of all sizes. This helps businesses make smarter decisions for logistics planning, disaster response, environmental monitoring, and more. SkyFi’s platform also offers a robust API that integrates with existing management and reporting systems, making it easy to use vessel tracking data in a variety of applications.
