MEMS Inertial Switches in Energy-Constrained Environments

MEMS inertial switches have proven their utility in a wide range of energy-constrained applications and are poised to play an increasingly important role in IoT and embodied intelligence (EI) systems.mems ins Their sparse data output and ultra-low power consumption enable strategic resource allocation in IoT networks, supporting real-time adaptive monitoring and control.mems ins Advancing structural designs, actuation mechanisms and system integration is essential to fully leverage MEMS inertial switches’ advantages in energy-constrained environments.

Inertial sensors are the building blocks of MEMS and deliver acceleration, angular velocity, and position data that can be used for positioning, stabilisation, and motion sensing.mems ins These are generally very accurate devices, but often require high levels of precision and can be expensive. However, many applications simply don’t require this level of performance and MEMS sensors are a cost-effective alternative that can be used in the most energy-constrained environments.

The most common inertial sensors in use today are accelerometers.mems ins These are small mechanical structures that measure changes in acceleration, based on the deformation of an inertial mass whose movement is measured by sensors on the MEMS chip. The inertial mass is hinge- or spring-mounted to limit its movement and the sensor reads these changes by sensing the electrical fields produced by the moving mass and relaying them to a microprocessor that converts them into an electronic signal.

Magnetometers and gyroscopes are also common MEMS devices.mems ins Magnetometers sense a local magnetic field and rely on the fact that certain metals — such as permalloys — change their resistance when placed in a magnetic field. They can detect very weak magnetic fields such as those created by the Earth’s magnetosphere, or strong ones like those created by motors and other electrical devices.

Gyroscopes, on the other hand, detect angular velocity.mems ins They can be quite precise but, due to their size, are less sensitive than accelerometers to vibration or shock. They can be found in smartphones to detect whether the user is holding the phone vertically or horizontally, as well as in robots to help them orient themselves in their environment.

Navigation-grade MEMS sensors such as those in ER-GNSS/MINS-01 are the driving force behind modern high-precision GNSS and INS integrated navigation.mems ins These sensors and intelligent algorithms allow GNSS and INS to deeply collaborate and complement each other in time and space, producing navigation information that can continue to be reliably outputted in dynamic, even signal-missing conditions.

MEMS inertial switches are made of semiconductor materials such as silicon and a variety of metals.mems ins Silicon is the most commonly used material because it is very robust and highly flexible. The ability to form a wide array of geometries within these miniature components, together with the fact that they are tolerant to high temperature, makes them very versatile and popular. This versatility, combined with their low power consumption, has led to MEMS becoming an indispensable technology in a wide range of devices. For example, airbag safety sensors in cars are actually MEMS accelerometers that have enabled significant improvements in functionality, compliance with automotive safety standards, and reductions in the number of components over previous systems.
