A common system architecture for military and civil GNSS/INS applications utilizes a GNSS receiver to track pseudorange and Doppler raw observable measurements from a set of geostationary (GEO) satellites such as GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou and the Satellite Based Augmentation Systems (SBAS) such as WAAS, EGNOS, QZSS and GAGAN. An extended Kalman filter then fuses these data with the accelerometer and gyroscope measurements of the receiver to produce an integrated solution for position, velocity, attitude and heading. This combined GNSS/INS approach offers operational flexibility, enhances survivability and ensures mission continuity across domains, land, air and sea.
To some GNSS advocates, this message is a call to arms to push only GNSS-centric research and development to resolve issues that may arise today. To others it is a wake-up call that GNSS is a means to an end and needs to be supplemented by other sources of PNT performance such as resilience.
